Fig1A: A vanR negative strain of Vibrio anguillarum was created using a suicide plasmid containing chloramphenicol resistance gene; this resulted in a mutant phenotype (non-functioning vanR). As a result of a non-functioning vanR, there was no ODHL produced. This indicated that vanR acts as the transcriptional activator of vanI which is involved in ODHL synthesis (the auto-inducer molecule for this organism).

Fig2. In-frame deletion mutagenesis was carried out on vanI; this resulted in no ODHL (N-(3-oxodecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone) production. This shows that vanI is responsible for ODHL synthesis.
