Creating Annotations through Critical Analysis of Original research (CACAO) is a competition for teams around the world to improve the functional annotation of genes and gene products.
CACAO will be be run as a lab course at Texas A&M in Spring 2024 under a microbiology theme. The competition will be executed in a new venue soon launching at cacao.wiki Instructors: Drs. Jolene Ramsey and Debby Siegele A&M undergraduates can participate by enrolling in Howdy under course: BIOL489 SPTP Crit Anal Instructors are welcome to join us by adding a student team from their course. Weeks 1-3
- Hone skills in finding & reading scientific literature
- Train to compete online with local & international student teams as part of the Creating Annotations through Critical Analysis of Original research (CACAO) project
The rest of the semester
- Create functional annotations for microbial genes from the papers you read (biocuration)
- Review annotations made by other teams
- Make a real-world impact by contributing your annotations to databases used by scientists worldwide
