I believe the GO Term GO:0039503 - suppression by virus of host innate immune response - is more appropriate for this protein. Figure 7B shows the inability of BUNdelNSs to suppress host IFN-beta promoter activity. The IFN-beta promoter activity in cells infected with wt BUN was more than 20-fold lower than in cells infected with BUNdelNSs. It is also shown in Figure 5 that wild-type BUN kills mice much faster than BUNdelNS viruses, which is likely due to the suppression of IFN-beta production in wt BUN infected mice.

In addition to Figure 4A, Figure 6 A-D shows comparative brain sections of mice that have been infected with the mutant and wild type virus. Figure 6d. the mutant brain section clearly shows fewer infected cells which are characterized by an orange/brown color. This supports the claim that the authors made that the NSs protein does serve some purpose towards virulence and pathogenicity.

No idea what Stoloff1 was trying to say, and Fig 7 is a schematic and can't be used as evidence.
