RscS1 if found to be an important protein in colony attachment and improve competitive fitness for colonies by encoding a histidine kinase/ATPase that regulates phosphorylation. By regulating the flow of phosphate this enzyme can possibly regulate transcription of colony attachment genes or regulate the enzymes after translation by activating or inactivating them via phosphorylation. This is shown phenotypcially with an RscS mutant if Figures 3,4,5, as well as Table 3.
