The first is a wild type organism with the gene for erg1^L37P operational. The second is a spontaneous mutant with a change in the erg1^L37P. The figure shows a chromatogram that shows lipid extracts with the levels of ergosterol and squalene shown. It is clear that the wild type shown has a high levels of ergosterol, representing normal function. The wild type shown to the right (with the erg1^L37P mutated) shows low levels of ergosterol and high levels of squalene. Assuming that no other gene was mutated or changed, this shows that squalene is an intermediate in the production of ergosterol.	challenge
