name: rolling circle DNA replication
namespace: biological_process
def: "A DNA-dependent DNA replication process in which a single-stranded DNA molecule is synthesized from a circular duplex template. Replication typically does not cease when one circumference has been replicated, but continues around the circumference several more times, producing a long single strand comprising multimers of the replicon." - This method of DNA replication is commonly referred to as sigma replication
About rolling circle replication in viruses
This is a PROCESS term, so use this term for proteins that are shown to be involved in replicating the DNA genome of a virus.
- Some viruses use both theta replication to initiate genome replication and then successive rounds of rolling circle (sigma) replication, such as bacteriophage lambda [1] or Herpes virus (see [2] for a review)
- RCR (rolling circle replication) is the method used by bacteriophage phiX174 [3] [4] and plant viruses such as the geminiviruses [5] to replicate their ssDNA genomes.
- It may be possible, depending on the evidence in a scientific article, that you will have to use a less specific term. Consider:
Other suggested terms that might be suitable if you are looking at modes of DNA replication
- If you are looking for MOLECULAR FUNCTION (ACTIVITY) terms that correspond with this process, you might consider starting here:
