Obg of S. coelicolor is essential for viability, in agreement with the results from B. subtilis (Trach and Hoch, 1989). It is also evident that Obg plays a crucial role in the onset of aerial mycelium formation and sporulation in S. coelicolor. Thus, S. coelicolor Obg has two different roles in the life cycle of this organism: an essential role and a regulatory role. Both of these functions are likely to be elicited by regulating membrane-signalling pathways in the cell, because Obg was shown to be associated with the cytoplasmic membrane.
