The study used a coupling assay with further down step reactions to measure the conversion of L-amino acid to D-amino acid with this enzyme. When placed into solution with the enzyme, only ornithine was converted from its L state to D state. This analysis was done by comparing flow peaks on a HPLC column using many different L-amino acids.

Figures 2 and 3 demonstrate that when there is the presense of proline racemase in solution, D-proline is converted into L-proline, which will be utilized by proline reductase which is shown in figure 1.
