Figure 1 shows that AmvA confers resistance in E.coli cells carrying the A.baumanii AmvA to antibiotics. Addition of the proton motive force decoupler CCCP renders the bacteria susceptible again. Figure 2 shows that A.baumanii and E.coli carrying the A.baumanii amva gene accumulate ethidium bromide and acriflavine more slowly compared to wild-type E.coli. Once CCCP is added, the concentration of these two increases sharply, implying a proton motive force driven transport of the drugs out of the cell prior to addition of the CCCP.
