Table 5 shows the ability of E. coli W3110 to oxygenate large hydrophobic substrates (emphasis in the text was on dodecanoic acid methyl ester, referred to as DAME) given differing plasmids from P. putida with different expression levels of alkL and alkBGT. The authors drew the conclusion of AlkL being involved in transporting DAME through the outer membrane based off the difference seen between pBT10 and pBTL10 as both demonstrated high expression of AlkBGT (which is shown to catalyze fatty acid methyl esters in Fig. 1) while pBT10 did not express AlkL and pBTL10 expressed AlkL highly.
