The (indirect) effect that viral P6 protein has on host cell death (apoptosis) is due to the role of viral P6 protein in regulating the host salicylic acid-mediated signal transduction pathways. The evidence suggests that pathways involved in the promotion of cell death in response to SA are inhibited by viral P6 protein. A more appropriate GO term would be "negative regulation by symbiont of defense-related host salicylic acid-mediated signal transduction pathway" (GO:0052003).
