Previous studies demonstrated homology between R. capsulatus sequences and those of nif genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Here, suspected nif sequences were cloned, fused with lacz (to facilitate expression) and inserted into E. coli.

Expression of nifH is strongly inducible under anaerobic conditions if the N source is either omitted or changed to 7 mM glutamate (Table 3).
