Usage Notes
Oxygenases are enzymes that incorporate oxygen atoms from O2 into the product(s). Monooxygenases catalyze the incorporation of one oxygen atom from O2 into the product; the other oxygen atom is reduced to H2O.[1] Dioxygenases incorporate both atoms of oxygen from a molecule of O2 into the product (or products) of the reaction[1]. Note that one of the molecules incorporating an oxygen may not be obvious from simplified descriptions of the reaction mechanism. For example, there are many ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases that convert ketoglutarate to succinate while transferring an oxygen to a more specialized substrate. In reading papers about such enzymes, the formation of succinate can be missed easily.
